The Yellow Coconut

I just returned from a trip to Missoula, Montana. I was there to help Rachel get into her new little place. She is now a graduate student studying social Work at the University of Montana. Go Grizzlies! Yes, she met the entire football team and they autographed a poster, but that is another story.
I like Missoula. The Clark Fork runs right through town. To get to Rachel's new place, affectionately know as the Yellow Coconut, you must cross this river. It is usually covered in people floating on inner tubes and surrounded by bicyclists and families pushing strollers on the riverside trails and in the riverside city center park.

Her place is located on this old treed street just a few blocks from campus, you can see the windows in a building at the end of this street if you squint. If you turn and walk the other way(west) you arrive at a section of town with great restaurants and shops, very hip, trendy, cool, or however described today. We tried about three of the restaurants and they were truly good. We had perhaps the best key lime pie ever and surprisingly, it was at an Asian restaurant. The home made ice cream place was a big hangout and always had a long line in the evenings. One night one of the local firetrucks was parked there with all the firemen hanging out eating a cone.
Well, anyway, if you stop on 6th street and look along the side of this house, you can see a little cottage way back behind the railing. This is Rachel's "Coconut".

Here is Rachel in her front yard which is the big house' back yard. She is sitting at the picnic table which is the closest spot around at which she can connect to the Internet. Fine for now but will need to be rectified as winter comes. I hear it gets cold in Montana.
Step inside and turn back towards the door and "ta da", Rachel's bedroom sized house!

There is a pretty small closet in the bathroom which is the only storage in the place. Rachel took my old cupboard from the Elba School, you can see it off to the left in a prior shot, and it does a pretty good job of holding most of her stuff. We also assembled an over the toilet shelf system for bathroom toiletries and towels and hung hooks and shelves around the place to help too.

The black freestanding stove is her only heat source. At least it is on a thermostat.
She is cold a lot even while here in AZ, (crazy girl, I never cool off). Did I mention that I think it gets cold in Missoula?
This cute little kitchen has no room for her table and chairs, nor does the rest of the place, so the table, if not the chairs, is probably destined for Goodwill.

Yes, she picked up her cat, Zoe in Utah, and I gave her a new(old) quilt for her bed, both shown here. I guess I should say Dave's bed 'cause she took his. The bed area and the shower area are under the low eaves making it impossible for even Rachel (maybe?) to stand erect at the head of her bed or in the shower, if there was one.

It is a good place in a good town and so cute. She is very excited about the new program, much dancing and singing ensued (see her post). She was really wishing she could do running back flips. I suggested a gymnastics course. What else is college for anyway?

Rachel's Moving Out

My living room has looked something like this for a while now. This time it's all of Rachel Annie's earthly goods in piles and boxes. The photo above is after a path has been cleared of the main pieces of furniture and a good portion of the boxes. We were in the process of loading our trailerand at a resting point.
She is moving to Missoula to attend Graduate school there! It is a good thing. We shall surely miss her but the excitment is contagious. Of course she is going to swing through Colorado on the way. I tried to explain to her that it is not exactly "on the way" but her 10 year high School reunion is there so... maybe i can convince her not to drive such a loaded vehicle pulling a trailer over the Rockies fom Denver to SLC but over the slightly less in elevation Rockies in Wyoming.

There was a decent amount of ground clearance, only five or six hours behind schedule, and she was wearing her tie dyed MC Hammer pants so all will surely be well.

Happy Trails Rachel!

weekend

I helped throw a wedding shower--invitaions, made but did not deliver them. Then for the food, I made Ian Kelly's famous Lemon bars (mine turned out almost as good as when he makes 'em) and bought bluberries-- and set up with table cloth, dishes and flowers etc. No cute games just SIMPLE was our M.O.
I also did flowers for a Wedding reception this weekend.
When I do all the flower pieces it is a lot of work. I usaully starts out simple and easy sounding then escalates into way more. I did not do the bouquet or boutenneer but I did do-- the register table, gift table, three buffet tables, a 'line' table, 6 guest tables and decorated the cake! We also salvaged a bad entrance walkway with 15 dollars worth or ribbon and a lot of "tweaking" by Rae. I could not have done this one without Rachel. Come to think of it she helped a ton on the last reception I/we did too. and helped withservice on another. She has a good eye. Thanks so much to Rachel!
My back did hurt afterward and I had a couple of glitches in the plan (there always are) but in the end it was beautiful and everyone was very happy (me too) and that is the main thing. I took some before photos but no after ones-- rats one day maybe, but it is just one more thing to do and sometimes you just have to get out. Maybe Katherine has some photos.

Something new

It has been far too long since something new was posted here. Not that I feel like saying much myself. We are all a little quieter these days.
I had a strange birthday this year. Only my second one in Arizona and I will admit it was a little lackluster...but that bit was my fault. I normally get more pumped up for my birthday and I didn't make enough effort to see the fireworks. And fireworks, I realized, equal my birthday. I did catch a few minutes of them from afar off in the desert, but I missed the oohing and aahing and the loud booms. My birthday also usually equals bbq-ing with friends or family. Mom asked me if I wanted to do something, but I shrugged it off. I think this Thursday I will try to make up for that by having some people over to pool party it up. We ate as a family at an Ethiopian restaurant, which was fabulous. That particular cuisine is something I discovered back in my Colorado lawn care days the summer before we moved to Arizona. Very fun stewed vegetarian and meat dishes that you eat by scooping it up with pieces of a thin pancake-like bread called injera. Yum and yum. Night hike in the desert topped off the day, and it was great. The desert is beautiful, even if you can only venture out in it at night. No pictures for now.

The prodigal daughter returns

Maintaining my own blog was just ridiculous. Who was I kidding? You would think that a single, living at home, no responsiblities type of girl would have nothing better to do than blog!! Ha, yeah right. But count it as a lesson learned. So I am posting on the good ol' Cutler blog again. Not that it will be terribly frequent, but I think I will give it a better go. Went to Conference last weekend, it was glorious. My first live one. Can the church get truer? No pictures though. Sorry. I have become a little camera unhappy. Hmm. Don't like that, maybe I should get snappin. Make some summer plans, take some trips, have something to look forward to.

The last time I uploaded photos was January so here is a little from the holidays in Utah and then a rock climbing trip in Vegas where I stayed with Sam and Kyle but took no photographs with them...sweet.

Colorado in the Suburbs of Phoenix

We do live in Val Vista Lakes. (our subdivision)

All those of those snow birds with sprayed on tans in their electric pontoon boats did a double take at the site of these two!

I think Summer is here for the displaced Cutlers.

Me & my kitty

Dear Mom,
Here is your supposed daughter finally ditching facebook to post something new and exciting on our blog. I might post my respect video if I am feeling brave enough (I am sorry I just don't think it sounds very good!!! Especially in the beginning. erk.) and once I upload it to my computer. I am currently out of disc space and need to take over Danny's laptop instead.

This is my new (old) cat. I have had her for maybe 2 months? David and I were out walking the dogs and heard a sad meow from under a bush and promptly adopted her. Her name is Zoe. The vetrinarians all adore her cause she is so easy going and well-behaved. She is darling. A good mix of spunk and snuggly. When she isn't nearly tripping Grandma running around under foot, she is snuggling with her in the chair. Here is a video of her playing...if I was tricky, I would put music to it but it is effort enough to post a video so don't expect pyrotechnics. And meanwhile don't strain yourself to listen to the video cause I am just on the phone in the background...

Cooler Water

I took a morning swim and the pool temperature is down to 83 degrees!
It has been cooler at night, probably because of the small wind /rain storm that blew through, so that has decreased the pool temp.
It is supposed to be fall after all.

Rachel sold her volkswagon chop top this week and so is searching for a new car today. A Mazda Miata is the top choice right now. Shopping for cars is, and always will be, a priority at this house, so no helpful work out of the rest of my family today.
"If it's not my job whose is it"? Bah.

I went to Alaska. It was incredible. I am still slack-jawed. Here are a few pictures.
More later when it is not so late.

Happy Birthday Rachel.

Love you Rae.
This is more fun for me than anyone else.

The Forth of July in Almo! It always made birthdays kind of a big deal for Rae. Thanks all.

Baby-fest

Took a roadtrip to Provo for some weddings and to move home a few of my things 'cause my old roommate was moving out of our old place. I didn't take any pictures of the blushing brides (sad) but I got a few of my friends and their babies! So that was neat. Here is Astrid of Jasmine and Arthur VanW.

Above: me and Cami
Below: me and Brad and Heidi. We had some good times when we were all living in the junky upstairs of 282 E 200 N. Close that chapter now...
Preston. Belonging to Dave and Sarah Aller. He pretty much couldn't take his eyes off of me the whole time I was at their house. I had to leave the room so he would eat and drink. This was the opposite of Astrid who managed to shatter glass with her cries when she realized I wasn't her mom holding her.

Hooray for friends and babies of friends!
